Located in a historic district of Des Moines, Iowa, this thoughtfully restored and expanded office building blends architectural preservation with contemporary workplace design. Originally a single-story masonry structure, the building underwent a full renovation and a 1,600-square-foot two-story addition to support a woman-owned financial planning firm. The original building now houses the main entrance, open work areas, and private offices, while the addition includes client meeting rooms, an upper-level suite, a breakroom, and a rooftop patio. A new staircase with a two-story art installation by local artist Sarah Grant connects the levels. The addition complements the historic structure through carefully matched materials and detailing, while a distinct metal “zipper” marks the transition between old and new. The result is a cohesive, light-filled, and functional environment that respects the building’s heritage while serving the needs of a modern business.
