The City of Des Moines Greenhouse is a cutting-edge, LEED Gold-certified facility designed to enhance horticultural production, increase efficiency, and maximize comfort for staff and volunteers. Covering 14,200 square feet on a 2.85-acre site, this all-electric, net-zero greenhouse features a dedicated solar array, passive cooling strategies, and fully automated growing environments tailored to the needs of various plant stages. Operated by the Parks and Recreation Department, the greenhouse produces over 230,000 flowering annuals each year to beautify public spaces throughout the community.

Sustainability extends beyond the building with 40% of the site dedicated to native prairie and pollinator plants, along with advanced rainwater management systems. Flood-resistant construction and elevation equipment address local environment challenges. The result is a highly efficient, daylit, and resilient facility that exemplifies Des Moines’ commitment to climate action, green infrastructure, and community well-being.

The Greenhouse Facility is LEED-NC v4 Gold Certified.
