Located at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Douglas Avenue in Des Moines, the Monsoon Asian and Pacific Islanders (API) in Solidarity Center is envisioned as a welcoming community gathering place that supports connection, engagement, and empowerment.

The project transforms an existing building into a warm, vibrant, and culturally rich environment that feels like home. Designed to bring people together, it celebrates API heritage and strengthens Monsoon’s mission through food, art, storytelling, and community-centered programming.

The primary goal is to create an inviting and flexible environment that evokes the nostalgia of home through thoughtful use of color, texture, scent, and cultural expression.

The space will feature a vibrant coffee shop operated by the organization, a curated gift shop that highlights API culture, and an adaptable event area for gatherings, art, and performances. In a future phase; a visible, high-quality commercial kitchen will be added. The design serves as a tool to foster connection, healing, and empowerment for API community members, youth, and survivors. Monsoon Center offers a place where people feel safe, seen, and inspired. The center will support trainings, cultural celebrations, and programs that building skills, strengthen relationships, and deepen community ties.
